Eventing Ireland Young Horse Pathway 2024 Announced!

Breeding General News Horse Sport Ireland

Eventing Ireland are pleased to announce the launch of our Young Horse Pathway for this year. It will consist of a number of training days for 4 and 5 year old potential event horses and will culminate with a DAFM sponsored final at Lisgarvan International Horse Trials on 24 August 2024 with a prize fund of €5000.

The training will be given by Gerald Bloomer and Sue Shortt in the fabulous Clonmahon House, Co. Meath. Each horse/rider combination must attend at least one training session to be eligible for the final.

The final will consist of flatwork, show jumping and cross country and suitability where top class judges will be assessing the horse.

Due to timetable constraints, only 30 horses in total will be able to qualify for the final so combinations will be assessed after each session and the top 15 in each age category invited to enter the final at Lisgarvan. We want to emphasise that this is really about training, not competing, so would encourage members aged 16 years or older with a 4 or 5 year old horse (over 14.2hh) to attend.

Training dates as follows:

  • 4th July
  • 23rd July
  • 6th August

Each rider may only ride 2 horses each day but can only qualify one in each age category. Riders must be fully paid up EI members and horses must be named at the final, with breeding and breeder recorded on passport.

A 4th session may be added if demand is sufficient. The training days will involve 2 riders per session for flatwork ( 45 mins) and 4 riders per session for jumping (1hr 15 ) but please note, due to timing some athletes may be asked to jump before flatwork.

Back protectors and approved helmets essential for jumping lesson. Riders may apply for more than one day but priority will be given to people who have not already attended once.

We hope to once again host a reception for owners and breeders on the evening.

Entries cost €95 per horse per day, which includes both flatwork and jumping lessons.  Unfortunately, the entry fees are not subsidised this year and are non-refundable if cancelled after the closing date unless the space can be filled.

Entries can be made via the Eventing Ireland website.  If there is a waiting list, entries will be on a first come, first served basis.
