ERQI 2.0 & Calculator

Over 5 years ago, Eventing Ireland was the first ever federation to partner with EquiRatings on risk management services. Today, the ERQI rating is used here, in Britain and in America. The FEI also use it at every international level, in every country in the world. Over the years, the rating has been adapted to keep updated with the changing sport and scoring systems and also to keep it transparent and understandable. The updated ERQI 2.0 calculation comes with all the same benefits as ERQI 1.0 but is now a transparent and easy-to-calculate number.

The ERQI 2.0 can be used by athletes and owners to make the best decision for themselves and their horses before making an entry. The objective for Eventing Ireland is the same as it was when we first launched this tool – to bring information to owners and riders and to give a voice to horses who on occasion, are competed at a level for which they are not yet ready, or not in the right run of form to compete at. Having tools like this in place are critical for our social licence and showing the thought and care that goes into each horses competition plan.

The occasional mishap cross-country won’t result in a poor ERQI 2.0 value – no more than the occasional good finish would make you a superstar. These performance tools are about helping riders think about the benefit of being consistent.

How do I calculate my ERQI?

We have included here a link to a Google Sheet which allows you to generate your own ERQI 2.0. Select the level at which you wish to enter, get the assigned value for each of your last 6 results, and then calculate the average. You can use hypothetical runs, if for instance your ERQI is red at EI100 and you want to know how many clears at EI90 it would take for your ERQI to return to a permissible value for EI100. Scroll down for examples.

Table of ERQI 2.0 values

Definitions

Clear: You finished XC with no jumping penalties

Single fault: You finished XC with one jumping error (e.g. one flag, one frangible device, one refusal)

Multiple: You finished XC with more than one jumping error on course (more than 20 jumping penalties) OR you had more than 0 jumping penalties before you retired, fell on the flat, had missed a jump or were disqualified

Elim: you were eliminated during the XC phase for something other than a horse fall (see below). However, if you were eliminated for ‘other technical’ and had 0 jumping penalties up to that point, do not count that run as one of your 6 counting results.

Horse Fall: You had a horse fall or trapped horse on the XC course

Which runs to count?

Count your last six runs (omitting any that meet the criteria below). If your horse has not yet had 6 counting runs, use as many counting runs as the horse has, down to a minimum of 3.

Do not count any results where you:

  • Didn’t start the XC phase
  • Had no XC jumping penalties before you retired, fell on the flat, missed a jump or were disqualified
  • Were eliminated for ‘other technical’ with no XC jumping penalties up to the point of elimination.

Example:

Previous six results (starting with the most recent result) of horse X, to calculate a level at EI100:

Result 1 – Retired with 20 penalties at EI100: EI100 Multiple Value (-2.5)

Result 2 – Clear at EI90: EI90 Clear Value (+3.0)

Result 3 – Eliminated due to three refusals at EI100: EI100 Elim Value (-4.0)

Result 4 – 20 jumping penalties at EI100: EI100 Single Value (-1.0)

Result 5 – 60 jumping penalties at EI100: EI100 Multiple Value (-2.5)

Result 6 – Clear at EI100: EI100 Clear Value (+4.0)

The ERQI is the sum of these values (-3) divided by 6 = -0.5

Because the resultant ERQI is below 0, the ERQI at EI100 is red, at level E.

We can calculate how many clears at EI90 will be required to raise the ERQI to a permitted level for EI100 by adding hypothetical runs. Remember, the oldest results will no longer be considered in the ERQI:

Hypothetical result 1 – Clear at EI90: EI90 Clear Value (+3.0)

Hypothetical result 2 – Clear at EI90: EI90 Clear Value (+3.0)

Result 1 – Retired with 20 penalties at EI100: EI100 Multiple Value (-2.5)

Result 2 – Clear at EI90: EI90 Clear Value (+3.0)

Result 3 – Eliminated due to three refusals at EI100: EI100 Elim Value (-4.0)

Result 4 – 20 jumping penalties at EI100: EI100 Single Value (-1.0)

This gives an ERQI of 0.25 (1.5 divided by 6.) So two clears at EI90 would be enough to allow this horse to enter an EI100.
